Babies are beautiful gifts. A neonatal nurse makes it possible for newborn babies to begin life on a positive note. Many times babies are brought into this world before their due date. This means that some babies do not weigh enough when they are born. Or, it results in babies that cannot survive without the aid of medical treatment. A neonatal nurse makes it possible for weak or small babies to have a decent chance of survival. Even if the baby was brought into the world before it was time is not the point. Or, maybe the baby was born with a crippling disease that needs specialized care. Neonatal nurse will do everything possible to give these babies a chance to survive.
With a bachelor’s degree, two to three years of training and a state certification examination, you could be on your way to a rewarding career in the neonatal nursing profession. This article is going to outline the three levels of neonatal nurses.
The first level of neonatal nurse specializes in handling newborn babies that are healthy. In years gone by, hospitals used to have nurseries where babies were cared for while new mothers rested in their hospital rooms. But, this is no longer the case because a lot of hospitals are trying to trim the expense of healthcare. As opposed to newborns spending time in the hospital nursery, they now spend time and bond with their mommies instead. This is just another way for healthcare companies to save more money. Level one neonatal nurses are not around in great numbers.
The level two neonatal nurse handles babies that are premature. Many times these babies are not sick at all. They just need more time to grow and get healthier before they are released from the hospital. They might need everyday common things such as special feeds. But, the extra care is needed before they are officially released to go home.
The level three neonatal nurse has a job that is harder and more stressful than the other two levels. You will see a level three neonatal nurse working in an intensive care unit for infants that need specific care. She is responsible for caring for newborns that need special attention that level one and level two nurses cannot supply. But, all three types of nurses should make sure that new mothers understand how to care for their babies. So, neonatal nurses are responsible for taking care of newborns and new mothers.
Finally, neonatal nurses are skilled on three levels. Due to changing policies, level one nurses are really no longer available in many hospitals. Level two nurses are responsible for taking of premature newborn babies who need a little bit more care before they are released to go home. Level three nurses have a strenuous job of taking care of babies in the neonatal intensive care unit. All levels of nurses are responsible for showing parents how to take care of their new babies. The neonatal profession is very satisfying.
